What can I expect on a Wellbeing Walk in Leighton Buzzard?

The first time that you come on a Wellbeing Walk please arrive 10-15 minutes early so that you can fill in a registration form if you have not done so already on line. The leader of the walk will take a register before setting off and introduce you to the backmarker, who will always stay at the back of the walking group Both the leader and backmarker will have high-vis jackets. You should stay between the leader and backmarker while you are on the walk to ensure that you don’t get lost. Please expect a mixture of different types of walking surfaces e.g. (hard surfaces/grass/woodland).

What should I wear on a Wellbeing Walk?

Please wear sturdy walking shoes or boots with a good grip. Much of the walking in Leighton Buzzard is on hard surfaces but we also use footpaths and go to areas which can sometimes be a bit muddy or wet. Walks cannot be done in flip flops or backless shoes. Please dress appropriately for the weather; it’s a good idea to check the forecast before you set out and wear layers. Bring waterproofs if there is a chance of a shower/rain . In the summer, don’t forget to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat if you need them.

What pace do the walks go at?

Generally, the walk leaders will try to maintain a pace where everyone in the group can maintain a conversation without becoming breathless, to get the maximum health benefits. However, we recognise that everyone is different. The leader will stop occasionally for everyone to catch up. Please be considerate and wait with the leader if others are a little slower than you.

What if I want to leave a walk part way through?

Please tell the leader or back-marker that you are leaving. If you don’t know where you are or don’t feel well they will help you.

Can I bring a dog on the walk?

We regret that dogs (other than guide and assistance dogs) will not be accepted on the walks

Are Wellbeing Walks leaders first aid trained?

There is no requirement for leaders to be first aid trained or carry first aid kits. Please bring your own first aid supplies.

Can I stop to take photos or look at points of interest?

Leaders may choose points of interest as short stopping places, and you are welcome to stop briefly and take photos. However, please be considerate to other walkers and do not hold the group up for long.

Are there toilets on the walks?

On most walks there will only be toilet facilities at the end of the walk in the café/pub where walkers go after the walk or in the public toilets in the town centre.

What should I bring?

It’s a good idea to bring a small rucksack to carry the essentials like your purse/wallet/phone/keys/tissues/mask/sanisiter and clothing you might need to put on/take off if the weather changes. Make sure you bring plenty of water to drink, especially in hot weather. Don’t forget to bring any medication you might need (e.g asthma inhaler) or emergency snack if e.g. you are diabetic. You may also wish to pack some basic first aid supplies such as plasters.

Can children or vulnerable adults join the walks?

Yes, if they are accompanied by a guardian/carer and are fit enough to complete the walks.

What about disabilities?

If you need assistance to complete the walks, please bring an assistant with you. Some walks may be suitable for wheelchair users – please discuss the route with the walks co-ordinator ahead of the walk if you wish to join the walk with a wheelchair.

Is there a charge?

No the walks are free.

What about bad weather?

The leader will make an assessment of the weather conditions before the walk and may cancel or shorten the walk if weather conditions are not appropriate. If bad weather unexpectedly occurs during the walk the leader may shorten the walk.

Who can come on the walks?

Anyone who is fit enough to come on the walks is welcome.

Do I need to book?

No, but you will need to complete a registration form in advance or on the day.

What happens at the end of the walks?

At the end of the walks, if you wish, you can join other walkers for coffee/refreshments in a local cafe or pub. The leader will advise you of the meeting place at the beginning of the walk.
